The more recent and very famous Bombe Alaska is reputed to have been invented by the American scientist, Benjamin Thompson, who was greatly acclaimed in Europe for his culinary skills. 

He was subsequently knighted  and later became known as  Count Rumford. 

He claims to have inadvertently invented the desert during various experiments he performed in 1804 with stiffly beaten egg whites and heat.
